‘lā ilāha illā / Allāh Muḥammad / rasūl Allāh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ in Arabic); citing the ʿAbbasid caliph al-Mustanjid billah (AH 555-566 / AD 1160-1170) in the margin, ‘al-Mustanjid billāh. ḍuriba hādhā al-fals bi Samarqand’ (‘al-Mustanjid billah. This fals was struck in Samarqand’ in Arabic).

Within a circle, ‘nāṣiruhū / Qilij / Tafghāj / Khāqān’ (‘His [i.e., the caliph’s] helper, Qilij Tafghaj Khan’ in Arabic); in the margin, ‘arsalahū bi al-hudā wa dīn al-ḥaqq liyuẓhirahū ʿalā al-dīn [kullih]’ (‘He [i.e., Allah] sent him [i.e., Muhammad] with guidance and the religion of truth, so that He may make it overcome all religions’ in Arabic).
